Stevens Model 44 barrel question.

Can a Stevens Model 44 .25-20 Single shot barrel have a liner installed and rechambered to make it a .22 Hornet? It's a fun rifle to shoot, but finding .25-20 Single Shot ammo is hard and very expensive. Was just wondering if it's even possible to rework the barrel for a more affordable ammo? Thanks.

It could be done but it's not a good idea. The 44 is basicly a black powder action and would shoot loose quickly with the pressure of the .22 Hornet. Stevens chambered a few of the last 44's, the Walnut Hill model, in .22 Hornet but quickly droped it because the actions lossened up quickly. It could be relined and be converted to .22 Long rifle but it would requre a rimfire breach block or converting the existing breachblock to rimfire. .25-20 brass and dies are available but not cheap. The .25-20 is a fun round to shoot though. Might be cheaper and easier to sell it and buy something easier to get ammo for.
