red tail hawk, my guess

It may be a buteo, but not a red tail. Photo is not good enough to ID species, but no belly band and smaller than a red tail and has stripes on the face.

Actually though, if you call any buteo spotted a red tail, you will be right about 80% of the time.

My guess it that it is an accipiter, a juvenile Northern Goshawk.

Not enough spots low on the belly for a juvenile Goshawk. I think it's a Coopers.

It sure is not a good enough photo to be very certain, but the * markings don't look right for a coopers, at least not the ones in my backyard. :?

Northern Goshawks range does not include the Carolinas. Could be a young Coopers or female Harrier
