Savage 99 Experts: safety problem.

Took my circa 1950 Savage 99 out to the range today and found the safety would move freely back and forth.
Had to manually push the safety back to fire and the recoil would cause it to go into the safe position meaning the safety had to be pulled back to move lever and eject. It is so loose when pointing the muzzle down, it goes to safe and pointing the rifle upward causes the safety to unlock.
Have owned and fired many 99s and never has an issue. Before I pull the stock and take it apart, felt I might ask any here if they have had this happen and what could be causing this problem.

The parts diagram shows a Safety Slide Spring maybe 3/4 inches long. It is twisted and bent to shape. Possibly it is broken. You can probably see it by removing the stock. This is for the safety on the top tang.
"Possibly it is broken."...............or just gummed up, 1st up is a good cleaning
Hit nail on head guys. Spring on order
