Lost in the mail

Going through a bad time right now. I shipped a nice rifle to a customer through the USPS and it hasn’t reached its destination.

Tracking information shows it was given to “an agent for final delivery “. What is that?

This has got me angry and frustrated. The post office says they can’t tell me who the rifle was given, They won’t start an investigation until 3 days after I complained.

Has anyone else lost a firearm shipping USPS? Maybe they can’t handle the responsibility.

You posted this in the wrong category, so I moved it to here General Discussion, although there isn't much anyone can do for you except maybe show empathy with you. Your issue is with the USPS, Welcome to the forums and please familiarize yourself with and follow the posting guideline.

Neil should come along to advise but maybe a sub contract company took it. YES, I have had lost firearms and after I took it a few steps they magically showed up? Also have had broken stocks x 2 in half, with insurance and never got the claim resolved.

I use USPS all the time, and they have never lost anything I've shipped.

That stated, some things have been misdirected, mishandled, etc. One rifle took over a month to be delivered, but it got there. I watched the tracking on one pistol as it bounced back and forth between Dallas and Denver, on its way to Colorado Springs. That one took three weeks.

That stated, the USPS has broken two nice rifles that I shipped. I had to go to extraordinary measures to get any kind of insurance settlement. I decided it wasn't worth the effort, and that I would rather have had the broken guns returned, so I stopped buying insurance.

Be patient. Your rifle may show up yet.

Sounds like they gave the package to someone they trusted to make the final delivery, like a family member of your customer or a doorman at an apartment building. If it was going to an FFL's business, perhaps an employee that set it aside and forgot about it. No telling at this point and if it doesn't show up after 3 days hopefully your enquiry will get them to figure it out. Best of luck. Bob

I had one gun damaged many years ago by UPS but it finely was taken care of

As fas as lost packages I have lost track of howany just this past Saturday my son and I had three packages due the post office holds them as I also have a po box

But info said delivered to front door We started looking on monday

We live ln a small area only acouple Post office workers and we know them

So when they started checking they had a fill in route driver on Sat from another local area ,not uncommon who delivered the packages to the wrong house.

After contacting the boss of the local PO they made some calls had our normal delivery lady track them down and bring them back

Just one story but it's happened many times delivered with UPS and Fed ex we have had to find / search with the neighbors even find and trade packages with people living severals miles away who had ours and we had theirs

Frustrating but so often it's sad we started a few years ago I refused to go looking toldthem I did not want shot just going to some ones house I did not know looking askingabout a package they delved wrong you delivered it find it and get it to me

One more story UPS lost/delivered a 800.00 camera lense my son had bought several years ago it took some time but finely got reimbursed for it but had to call many times and keep going up the ladder same time the selling company who shipped it was pushing harder to find out as they had paid the insurance it was never found but my son did his money back

@chuckgross : did you ship to a FFL? If you did, you could contact them for additional info. Might be worth a call.

You aren't in the "worry" zone yet. If it said "delivered" and you know it wasn't this is when you start to file all the paperwork to chase it down.

You can call the post office in the area it is being delivered and most of the time they will be pretty helpful with a delivery that seems to be off track.

I bought some pistol cases from a guy in Michigan. He put them in the mail and sent me a tracking number. The went to another city and that was the last I heard. I contacted the seller and he told me "Tough luck".

I can picture in my mind 1000 45acp cases rolling around on the floor of the post office.

USPS has a shipping option designated as "Parcel Select" that hands your package over to an independent shipping "agent". At that point the tracking number disappears........and does not get updated until the package is delivered to a USPS office.

I "lost" a pellet rifle, for 6 weeks, when a seller used this lousy shipping option.

Avoid "Parcel Select".........like the plague!!!! 🤨

Thanks for all the replies. Status is: destination Local post office gave up, declared the rifle lost. I filed the atf form 3310.11 firearm in transit theft/loss report. Reported the matter to my local sheriff. Updated the destination FFL and will file a claim for the insurance money in another week.

The post office has lost two bank checks this year for me. One for 27,000 and another for 5000. I wish i didn't have to deal with them at all.

A check for $5K and for dang sure, A check for 27K should have been mailed "registered".
