Deck Recommendation's -

I scheduled a visit for a Quote by a Contractor whose work I have seen before and was impressed with. (Will be here to look/talk to, in about two weeks.)
I plan on having him do a complete Tear Down/haul away of my old wrap around deck and build me a new one in the Spring.
I plan on using something like Cattle Panels (or similar) in between the 4×4 deck posts. (Something with a slightly smaller mesh size would be good, in case I ever get a smaller dog.) I plan on having two gates. One on the side of the house and one out the front door, So I can just open front or rear door and let Buddy out, in order to have full access to the wrap around deck.
I plan on having the deck uprights/sides a little taller in height, than normal to prohibit Buddy from getting his paws on top and pulling himself up and over.
Any experience/suggestions for a beefy Wire type mesh panel. I've seen this done before, so I know they are out there. A 2-3" mesh size would be ideal. (Covered in green vinyl would also be ideal.) My Contractor may know what these are called. I'm just looking for advice/suggestions before he shows up to fully explain my ideas to him.
I've done Carpentry/Construction before and have built many decks. (Like Allen Griggs.) I'm too old to tackle this project by myself, primarily because 2/3 of the deck is a full one story off the ground in back where my deck is and the ground falls sharply away.
Any advice/input appreciated.

How many built-in shooting benches are you going to have installed?
Any Serious shooting, I walk next door. My neighbor/buddy has a nice range set up. (Shooting bench under his covered front deck.) Various Targets on a large backstop. (25-150 yards.) Various size gongs set up in lanes through the woods on an uphill bank. (25-250 yards +/-)
I have a BOGS Deathgrip Shooting Tripod, I can use anywhere. Better than a bench. Once you use one, you will not go back. 👍
Dang, Todd. I was hoping you were gonna post a photo of your recent builds decks, having what I was talking about. 🤔

I plan on having the panels about 4" up off the deck surface, in order to able to blow/sweep/rake leaves off the deck. Right now, my 2×2" uprights go all the way down. Just one of many reasons my current deck was poorly thought out and built. (Constructed w/smallish non-galvanized nails in pressure treated wood.) Who does that? I/we always used galvanized screws to construct the many decks we built, never nails. (Especially non-galvanized.) 🙄

Home Depot here carries 2x3x48 PVC coated wire mesh in 50 ft rolls. Next places to try is the farm supply stores.
We have post and cable. The stainless steel cables are about 3" apart. Daughter brings her small dog when she visits, and it never even tries to get through the cables. I think dogs are smart enough to see that it's many feet to the ground from there and don't attempt it.
@KenK/84Bravo : have you asked your neighbor, the fence-post repair specialist, for his input? 😁
I used this stuff when adding on to an existing fence. Easy to work with but I'm not sure it's exactly what you're after.
"...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." 🍺 🇺🇲 🍔
I like Rocky's idea. It'll be more expensive, but it won't look like you're raisin' hogs on your deck, either.
There are panels made for just what I am talking about. (Not just heavy fencing, but panels.) While I like the tensioned cable look, it would not keep Buddy in. He's smart enough not to jump off the back, but it's ground level on the side and front. Not gonna take a chance with my Pit getting loose and jumping on someone's Pet. That will get him shot, around here - and I would not blame them.
It looks very nice by the way. Does not look like you are "Raising Hogs."
That neighbor and I get along fine now. Have had several interactions since he was resistant to fixing my Property. (And has since fixed it.) Once he figured out, I was not going to be dismissed.

Hey hogs gotta right to enjoy the deck too! Just kidding but, I do have what some call hog fencing on the back porch to enclose it as part of the dog run...😁
maybe some thing like this

Have worked in ag construction in some degree for 50 years ..If keeping Buddy contained is a high priority then the horse panel or the cables may be the best bet. A pit will easily tear thru the vinyl roll wire. The wire would be fine for a lap puppy or rug rats
Not talking about Vinyl roll fencing @pulsarnc. (I also would not use that.) It is sold in rigid 4×8 panels, made for what I am talking about. Just not sure exactly what it is called. (My Contractor will know what it is called. (Roughly $50/sheet. So about $1200 in the panels alone.) Very rigid panels, not gonna be torn up by a dog. I have seen it used in various Construction/Off Grid Building type set- ups. It looks very nice. I will post photo's of mine when done.
Will look at your links @redhawkk480, that may be the ticket. I am sure Home Depot, Lowes or Tractor Supply will have what I am talking about. (I'm just not sure what they are called.)
*The thickness of what I am talking about is roughly 3/8ths.

The ground-level access does put a different slant on it. I won't bother taking pictures of ours.
Photo's @Ruger4me? (If you would, Sir.)

It's just field fence that comes on a roll that I tacked to the wood posts and won't bother with pics since it's not the horse or cattle panels which are stiffer and I have seen used for what you are thinking about, oh and the panels have gone up in price a lot the last few years your $50 a panel are probably closer to $100 these days, at least around my farming area.
would buddy climb the square fencing, it makes great footholds for his paws???????
That is a major concern of mine, Paul.
We had a Black Lab mix (my Brother's) that was an escape artist. We couldn't figure out how she was getting out "at will." We finally saw her climbing the fence (easily) and jumping over. It gave me pause, as to fences, to contain an athletic dog. Hence Buddy being hooked up to long beefy trolley lines, front and rear of the house.
I plan on also getting a portion of my front yard fenced in, maybe a 1/4 acre. (Higher than average, in height.) I'd really like to be able to let Buddy roam, without the lead. (Which he does not seem to have a problem with.)
I am torn.
That is the one reason, I am thinking the large 4×4 openings would be better, as they would be harder to climb. (Any advice, is appreciated.)
*It would break my Heart, if Buddy got out/ran off.

you may buy a piece and put it up temporary in the house in a door way and see if he will climb it to get to you or one of his toys if you toss one over....
or better yet put a gate on the deck before it gets to ground level and keep him in the part above ground only.
Something like this?
If you wait till spring, I will take a week and come help you build it. Built many a decks and garages. It will cost you home cooked meals , a Macanudo Rothchild maduro, and some Buffalo trace at the end of the day😉. I really don't mind coming down to help you. Your call buddy. Oak
That is one very kind and generous offer.
Yep. That's pretty much it. 👍

Ken, PM sent
Dang, Brother @Oakie, that is an incredibly generous offer. (Very tempting.) I am sure I can come up with a couple other people to help, if we did that. (Maybe have my Son come down, etc.)
I would hate to impose upon you. (I know make $$'s, in a week.)
(Plus,) I would have to de-Bachelorize my Place, (😆) for such a visit. Have most all/tools necessary. Would not be an easy build by any means. 1-1 1/2 stories off the ground in the back. (2/3rd's of the deck area.)
*Yeah, I am looking to do it in the Spring.
"A Macanudo Rothchild maduro." What's that? A glorified dog turd? 😂

"Or better yet put a gate on the deck before it gets to ground level and keep him in the part above ground only." -hillbille.
That may be another option, but I would prefer to be able to let him out front/rear door, give him free reign and enjoy being off collar. End game will be to connect that with about 1/4 acre fenced in yard. (Higher height than normal.)
I have apprx 2 1/2-3 acres.

How about 1/2" thinwall conduit pickets? Drill holes in the top and bottom rail. Cut the conduit in equal lengths and install vertically. Ever how many inches apart. Thin wall is still relatively cheap.
Unaware of those. Will look them up. I'm pretty sold on grid panels though.
Extreme NE TN/W NC ya'll. 😁
Grid panels, harrumph.
What you need to do is find an old metal mesh corn crib that needs to be torn down. Then, volunteer to tear it down, to keep the panels.
Have a smaller lower garden ringed in them. Works awesome, but I also have goats, cows, horses, chickens, guinea fowl, ducks, and an odd pig roaming around I want to keep out of said garden, so, may not fit your needs.
Around here, tear downs like that, are few and far between. (And also,) Anything useable like an "old metal mesh corn crib," is Not going anywhere.

Just give me a months notice and I will be down. Let me know what you want me to bring. I can get a couple of good nail guns and have a ton of saws, from a table saw to a compound/miter saw. We will get R done for ya.
Checked my PM's @austin20. Nothing there from you, only one from Neo.

I tried again let me know. The meat of my message was checkout the website:

Nothing again @austin20. I've seen experienced this before where multiple attempts at PM's do not work. (Oakie and I have had that problem.) I tried to shoot you one, but you are listed as "private." (Maybe that is why?) I don't know.
Thanks for trying. I will check them out. (Decks Direct.)
*I appreciate everyone's input/suggestions. 👍

Thanks for the heads up. I will try to fix it on my end
