Car Battery

buddybbuddyb Member Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭✭

The battery in my Nissan truck finally gave up.Any suggestions on the best battery. The battery in it is a Interstate and from what I understand they no longer make that battery. It had a 5 year warranty and lasted 12 years, which I never even heard of a battery lasting that long.

I just got a NAPA battery in the Frontier. $208.

If your battery lasted 12 years, it is a miracle to surpass the Miracle of Fatima in Portugal in October of 1917.

    Agreed MJoe.
I just go to our local Rural King store for my old 2005 truck.
Side note, the wife’s old Nissan Sentras battery lasted close to 12 years.
I only replaced it because it was handed down to my son and when he left for college, I thought I’d do some preventative maintenance on it.
The battery would still start the car but it was slowwww.
I warned him about it when he got home. I didn’t want him to burn out the starter. 😆😉

My friend had a service station until recently. He was an Interstate dealer. He would keep a few "blem" batteries and sell them for about half the price if new ones. If one failed within a year, he would replace it free. I have two in my diesel truck that are several years old. I try to keep a trickle charger on them in the winter

Wife's car has a Napa Gold and I will replace it with the same.

She carries a jump starter called a Halo, no bigger than a paper back. It will start anything but a diesel

    Added safety note:

Watch the height of a new battery, if it has top post terminals. If too tall they can jump arc across the hood and cause battery explosion or fire.

    Napa batteries are good

    Deka batteries are good

    Interstate batteries are good.

I have a Carquest battery in my exploder that I bought in 2011. It is still going strong. I don't know who manufactured that battery.

Remember————-ALL battery lines have "pricer" batteries. Buy their best battery.

My 1994 7.3 diesel has two Optima marine starting batteries with welding cable leads. That all was installed in 2015. Sets for weeks. Lights right up.

My DIL is employed in a DEKA plant. Probably OK batteries but the workforce is degrading into whatever walks in the door so keep in mind for future reference.

I have a local Interstate dealer who gives me excellent service so that helps the choice of Interstate. I've not had any failures from Interstate.

A month back, we bought a couple of NAPA batteries for a combine we'd bought 1/2 way across Kansas. There was a problem with the fuel system and those fresh off the shelf batteries were severely tested but when we went back a month later to try again, the batteries still had plenty of life left to grind the starter for as long as it took to re-prime the fuel system. So NAPA batteries get a double 'thumbs up' for that.

I have had AGM batteries last 12 to15 years. O'reilly.

I received one interstate battery that was SUPPOSED to be AGM but was just a lead acid battery with acid sent in separate containers. I sent it back.

I would go with Interstate batteries they are the best for your money. make sure you save you receipts. That way any problem during the battery life you can get a replacement.

I have about as much luck as any with Walmart batteries. I have an Interstate battery on one tractor that is old, maybe 10 years, but the guy that still sells them says the newer ones want last as long.

The Everstart Maxx batteries from Walmart have served me well, and have always outlasted their expected life-span.

One brand I would definitely NOT recommend is Advanced Auto's store brand (I forget what they call it). I've had two, and neither of them lasted 2 years.

The decline in car battery life can be traced to the increasing amount of electronic gadgets installed in the cars. Many, or most, of these gadgets draw power from the battery all the time, even when the car is turned off sitting in your garage. This causes the battery to lose some charge which is replaced once the car is started again. This constant down, up, down, up cycle is not good for a battery.

I change every five years period. Most any battery should last that long.

Wide temperature swings........seems to kill every battery I've ever had.

Here in far North Central Texas, my batteries usually last about three years.😖😫

    YMMV........depending on where you live.

Yep, heat seems to kill them off early. A friend who lived in Arizona said they would buy the lowest CCA battery in a given group size. The extreme heat warps the plates in a battery. The lower CCA battery has less plates, so they are spaced further apart.

    Napa bats are good.

Suspect they might be re-branded Interstate.

Might be time to convert that rig to ALL ELECTRIC. (according to Brandon)

I used to work for a battery company, Globe Union, that made Interstate and Diehard brands. They ALL have a planned life span. It is possible to make a battery that will last 20+ years, but then they couldn't sell enough to stay in business, plus the cost would be prohibitive.
