.30 Gibbs & .300 RCM

The latest issue of Handloader magazine has an article on each of these cartridges. It surprises me since the Gibbs has been long gone and the RCM never really took off. My .30 Gibbs is a much modified Springfield NRA sporter made in 1924 and rechambered. I've had it since 2018 but haven't done enough range testing with it to be conclusive. It looks like it will do around 2825 fps with 180's: I haven't tried 200's, yet, but would like to get into the 2700's with them.

My RCM is a 22" barreled Ruger Hawkeye. I bought it new in 2012. The factory loads are really impressive velocity-wise with 165's cronographing 3100 fps and 180's @ almost 2900! But I can't get anything like that with safe handloads. Like the Gibbs, it appears it will beat the old .30/06 by only about 150 +/- fps with handloads.

Anybody else ever fooled around with these cartridges?

There is an extensive article on the .30 Gibbs in the May/June 1978 issue of Hand loader magazine by Bob Hagel. Maybe you can bring it up and read it. He says it is more hype than reality over the parent '06. I remember when the Gibbs line was touted as the poor mans Weatherby.
