Government Tracking whomever they Want.

sovereignmansovereignman Member Posts: 544 ✭✭✭
Two new federal GPS trackers have been found on an SUV in CA. The government says they don't need a warrant to use these devices to track anyone they want. Kim Zetter, reporter for Wired, will join Ian to update us on how the government is secretly using GPS devices to track people. Privacy expert, Lauren Weinstein, will weigh in with his thoughts about the government using GPS tracking devices on people without search warrants. [:(]

I wonder what would keep a person who finds a tracker on his vehicle from putting it on someone elses car, or just plain destroying it with a brick?

Placing it on another vehicle would probably be some violation of privacy. Putting it in the dump would probably not be.

It would seem to be correct that they don't need a warrant to use the device. If it's their property they should be able to use it. What would seem to warrant a warrant, would be to place the device on a vehicle they don't own.

    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

No suprise to me. Did you also know they track you/listen to your cell phone conversations too.
Soo if it hasn't already been done all vehicles will have a tracking device from the factory. They will just call it something like....oh....on-star or whatever. [;)]

If I find one on my car I'll sneak down and place it on Jimmie Johnson's #48 Chevrolet at the next Atlanta race.

According to the Fourth Amendment, guarding against unreasonable searches and seizures (for which they have to have a warrant that was based on reasonable credibility), they cannot track YOU. They can track THEIR vehicle if YOU work for them. If YOU don't work for them, they CANNOT track YOU or your VEHICLE without a warrant.

No, they can't just track YOU. However, passage of the NDAA preempts any American freedoms YOU think YOU might enjoy.

    This is old news.

"His discovery comes in the wake of a recent ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals saying it's legal for law enforcement to secretly place a tracking device on a suspect's car without getting a warrant, even if the car is parked in a private driveway."

On the other hand, you may be able to be tracked without them 'placing' a tracker on your vehicle. RFID chips are in some brands of tires, some states' driver's licenses, US Passports, and other devices like Toll Road trackers. Any one of these devices can be useful to track without having been placed there by an agent of the Government for the express purpose of searching and seizing you, your property, or any pertinent information. On the other hand, these RFID frequencies are less likely to be tracked by virtue of their limited use and knowledge of their frequencies and if it is specifically individual or by brand.
