Does 5.5 gr of w231 sound like it would be a good charge behind 185 gr plated flat points. Don't want them too light cause the kimber we have doesn't cycle well with light loads

Sounds like a good place to start. Load up a handful and see if they cycle the gun.

5.5 of 231 should give you about 825fps at about 14,500 cup of pressure.

This is a light load for a gun that doesn't like "soft" loads.
Try it, but I think you will have to go higher...5.9 or so.

You will probably need 15,500 to 16,500 cup's to function a "stiff" gun.

5.9 might be too hat for that bullet [B)]
Try the 5.5 as you need to use lead data for plated bullets [^]

Well, the lowest starting load I have is 4.1gn and that is a nice target load that I use occasionally, but does need a lighter recoil spring.
The highest I have needed to go was 5.3gn, with 5.1-5.2gn being another excellent target load.
5.7gn is the lowest Max load I have, with most being 6.0gn for lead and plated.
For a jacketed bullet, the lowest max load I have is 5.4gn, with most being 5.8-6.0gn.
I don't like to jump in at some estimated load and don't mind working up through light loads to avoid finding that what I thought was safe was actually max or over max in my gun.

Changing the recoil spring to a lighter one can solve your 'cycling' issue.

    I use 5.5 grain of 231 behind a plated Berry's 185gr SWC.

The "standard" IPSC load for the .45 auto is 5.5 gr WW231 and 200 gr semiwadcutters. It makes major caliber power levels and functions in almost all .45 autos flawlessly without gun modifications.

5.1 with 230 cast LRN ball here, working great so far.

5.5 with 185s seems good but might need to go up a few 1/10ths if jamming continues.

You want to be VERY carful light loading 231, 296 or H110.
I have found over the years that Bullseye is the most versatile powder for the 45ACP.
I load 5grs with a 200gr RNFP Cast bullets for bowling pins.
I load 2.8grs with a 200gr SWC for NRA Bullseye shooting.
I load 5.5grs behind a 200gr Hornady XTP for carry loads.
All of these loads work great in all of my standard size 1911s.
