Video of GAP Grind competition

I thought you all might find this video interesting since it covers one of the top major Tactical competitions in the U.S. It gives you a fairly lengthy visual description of a major event. Be sure to watch the sequences with the bullet trace enhanced.

    NeoBlackdog,

It is a hoot to shoot to be sure! Even in an 8 hour downpour on the first day. There were two pauses on the first day because we couldn't see the targets through the rain at 800, 900 and 1,000 yards... They don't call it the 'Grind' for nothing. Running and gunning for two days straight.

    bpost,

The conditions on the second day were better for trace than the first but we still got a show on Day 1 when shooting in between the rain storms. Trace is also extremely helpful for the Team Shooters because it enables them to see the flight path and since most are shooting the same cartridge as a team, they gather good visual data. This makes the first shooters the guinea pigs but it evens out as the Match progresses. Squads had to rotate who shot in what order so that no one shooter was penalized by being the first test case at every station change.

    Best.

    ADDED:

As a testament to fine rifle builders, fine custom ammunition and great shooting talent...

One of the shooters had ordered a rifle for the Match, which ended up arriving the day before the Match took place. Copper Creek had made ammunition for his rifle so he sighted it in and ran the practice course for a couple of hours. He placed 11th out of the 90 some competitors!

What's the most common rifle caliber in the GAP competition?

Also, an observation... It sure seemed like there was a lot of turret twistin' goin' on when they would move from one target to another. It would seem that a fella that knew his gun could gain some time by usinig a mil-dot scope or a scope set up with a BDC reticle. Thoughts?

    NeoBlackdog,

Without checking a list, my guess would be .308 Win. and 6mm Creedmoor at about dead even. Other cartridges included:

    6XC
    6x47 Lapua
    6.5x47 Lapua
    6.5 Creedmoor
    6.5 RSAUM
    6.5x284
    284 Win.
    .30-06
    .300 Win. Mag.

Those are the ones I can remember seeing.

As to scopes and knob twisting, with the number of stages and number of targets within each stage, all at stated distances, it's easier to twist than to mil each target due to time. The targets were all at known distances but those distances were aberrant as in 717 yards, 309 yards, 978 yards, etc. Time limits for 8 to 15 shots per stage was 2 minutes. What you didn't see in the video was the number of shooters who timed out or didn't shoot all the targets within a stage within the allotted time.

    Best.
