Drawing down .45APC case to.4375

Twowings2UTwowings2U Member Posts: 90 ✭✭
Drawing down .45 ACP, or .308 brass down to .4375

Then drop in a lead core & swage up to .458 ...

making a trial die & punch to work the cases--see if they need annealing, etc.
Gonna have a starting section about 1" long, slip fit on .45 ACP case
then the forcing cone??? down to .4375

Question: what should be the entrance angle & length of the remaining
.4375 section ??
Made sumpin like this 50 yrs ago, but lost it & fergot how..

45-70 0n a Jap Arisaka 6.5 action

I'm confused - how long and final diameter change?

Angle is easy with these 2 pieces of info.....

    to mg90

The drawing die will be approx 2.5" long overall
The starting section will be aprox .472 O X 1.2" long. (slip fit on
    fired 45ACP case.
Then we come to the drawing down section, where the brass is squeezed down & exits into the finished size (.4375 O X 1.2" long

What is the shape of the junction of these two diameters??

Look at it thisaway--I'm gonna drill/ream a hole .4375O" all the way through a piece of steelapprox 2.5" long.
Then I'll ream a hole .472O half way--

What should be the shape of the cutting end of the larger reamer???

    Thanks for your interest

I would think that a half inch at your final diameter would be way more than enough. O.490

I think I would make a brass pilot bushing of sorts to fit over the small end of this reamer.

    Brand: Alvord Polk
    Mfr Part #: 18063
    Price: $108.00 ea.
    Taper Size Designation 4
Small End Diameter (Decimal Inch) 0.3474
    Reamer Diameter (Decimal Inch) 0.5017
    Reamer Function Finishing
    Flute Length (Inch) 3-11/16

I"m trying to make .458 bullet jackets out of 45acp or .308 fired cases.

If I use the .308 cases, they will have to be trimmed off to 1.2"? long

What I"m trying to do is make bullet jackets from used .45ACP or.308 used brass shell casings.

I first have to shrink them down, press in a lead core, and then
    swage them up to .458

I feel like there is a short, Ideal shaped transition from .475O to
.4375O which will minimize the effort and produce the least work
    hardening of the brass

    Hi,
So, the remaining (2.500" - 1.200") length is 1.300", with a .0345" diameter change. Solving for this angle yields .5847 degrees per side, or 1.1696 degrees inclusive angle.

Are you going to push them through the die mouth first or head first?I would think concentricity would be better if you used a spud inside the case to push it through base first.

Yes,head first, with a tapered sleeve to center the open end of the case
    if necessary .

The shorter you make the transition(funnel) the more likely the case will be to cant or enter the taper cock-eyed. A longer taper with a short parallel at beginning and end would be my suggestion.

Why are you sizing down then sizing up?
The chance of cocking a .437 slug in a .458 die would be avoided by sizing down a .495 slug (lead +brass) assembly in one or two stages to .458.
I'd start with fully annealed brass sized in a 45acp fl die.
