Primer Recommendations

I have really enjoyed my time on this site and have learned a lot from all the great people here.
I just completed my first AR15 build a few days ago but have not test fired it yet. That will probably happen this weekend. I bought a Fulton Armory upper with one of the original Colt barrels on the GB auction side and completed it with a DPMS stripped lower that I completed with a DPMS parts kit. Useing Clint McKees instructions it all went well and the completed gun passes all of his suggested pre firing tests. I am anxious to test it out.

Now on to the real purpose of this posting. After being out of reloading for about 45 years I am getting back in to it. Back in the 60's I reloaded for an 8mm Mauser Model 98 I had. I also reloaded 375 Holland and Holland for a pre 64 Winchester Model 70 I had. It ended up getting stolen.

I am going to be reloading the following:

9mm
44 Magnum
45 ACP

223 Remington
7.62X54R Russian

12 Gauge

My main question at this time is what primers do you folks recommend? I know that I will need 5 different primer types. I will need small pistol, large pistol, small rifle, large rifle, and shotgun.

If a different brand is preferred for different applications then I will just get whatever is needed. In fact I will be attending a gun show this weekend and there should be a good selection of primers available there. Thats right, there is a gun show within 3 miles of my residence on New Years weekend!

I have all the equipment already bought and also have a good stock of brass and shotgun hulls, except the 7.62. I am anxious to get started.

THANKS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Just about any brand is OK for casual shooting and hunting. If you are striving for the ultimate BR accuracy then some experimenting would be in order.

The CCI small rifle primers are popular for the 223, they even have a mil spec primer available.

I have CCI loaded in my 45 wad-cutter match loads but found the Federals work just fine too, grouping well at 50 yards.

I recently obtained some Wolf primers because of cost, they are good primers, giving excellent results across a chronograph.

Cheddite primers for the shotgun are available from www.powdervalleyinc.com some folks swear by them, the pricing is good too.

    Have fun, be safe!

I use CCI exclusively except last year when I could only get Win SP. I use milspec in the AR's and military surp rifles. I've not had a problem with ignition using the CCI#41(small rifle milspec) primers in anything I shoot but remember to slightly reduce the load as those are considered a magnum primer. Same with the CCI#34 large rifle. I've had some Mausers pierce standard primers but never had that happen with the #34. I'm using the #34 on everything .308 and up since I bought many thousands of them 2 years ago on an overstock sale.

44mag & 45acp this primer does both WLP. 12ga-look up the recipe you want to use, this gives you the primer for the hulls/wads/shot weight. 223-i have used Fed,Rem.& CCI

I use CCI or Winchester Small rifle for 223. In my ARs', they shoot for all practical purposes the same. Std, no military special primer.

Use Winchester and Federal for small pistol.

Have used both Winchester and Federal large rifle(magnum and std) for hunting rifles. Not a lot of volume there though.

Have heard good thing about Wolf and Tulu(?). I believe powder Valley was having a special. I just am stocked up, may try.

As a non-benchrest guy, usually not a big difference. Alomost every rifle I own will shoot 1 moa. Good enough. My 204 is about half that, varmit rifle.

A big old THANK YOU to all of you for your recommendations!!!

I went to a local gun show last weekend and was very disappointed. I found no primers and the only powder I found was a few collectable old metal cans with a few ounces in each. Enough bullets in total to maybe fill a coffee can and very little brass. What a waste of time. I did find a very nice Gould and Goodrich 1911 magazine pouch that I bought. I don't think I will be attending any more gun shows on holiday weekends.

    AGAIN, THANKS!!!

I have always been partial to CCI. I think you will be fine with just about whatever you choose. Frankly, primers are the cheapest experiment in reloading you can make if you are dialing something in.
