Pyrodex Pellet question

I used some pyrodex pellets in my in-line muzzleloader and noticed there is a slight delay in the ignition time. Can I put a little loose powder in first with the pellets to aid in ignition time?

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I don't think the Pyrodex people recommend the idea. Plus it might be hard to replicate from shot to shot. Bottom line ... ya gotta learn not to flinch!

If your going to put a little powder in, why not throw the pellets away and go to the loose all the way? it is a lot easier to fine tune your accuracy.

Or try Hodgdon Triple 7 pellets or loose powder ... make life easier! Then work up the load that works for you and your gun.

I don't know much about it, never shot a muzzleloader much. Just the slight delay in ignition caused me to miss a deer a while back. You think triple 7 is better than pyrodex?

Although you probably know this, one end of those pellets is different colored. That different color is actually black powder, added to act as an ignition aid. Be sure to load the pellets with the black powder end pointed towards the breech, if you aren't doing this already. Good luck.

Oh, yes ... Hodgdon Triple 7 is better than Pyrodex and the clean up is a lot better!

I'm new at this smoke gun stuff but i have read that you should use the 209 shotgun primer with the pellets. I have tried both and I could tell a big difference in ignition speed. The shotgun primer really is hotter and faster.
