We stopped by the Makers Mark in Kentucky yesterday.
Now, if you are a Muslim or a Mormon you need to pass this by I certainly don't want to send you to hell.
Otherwise, this is a great tour! Vats of fermenting corn, made of wood.
Ten feet across and fifteen feet high, use your pi R squared and figure out how much booze this is.
You are looking at the top of this vat it sticks through the floor and is about 15 feet high. There are 8 of these giant vats.
Gorgeous copper stills.
Lots of charred oak barrels. The big warehouses hold 55,000 barrels. There are 18 warehouses.
The girlfriend got to dip her own bottle of Makers Mark into the distinctive red wax.
The last stop is a bar room. All guests are served a few shots of this magnificent bourbon.
I just had a little nip.

The Bourbon trail is on my radar!!
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
What happened to your hair?
(And) You are wearing Bedroom Slippers.
Big Al (still getting used to this new forum software, I am!)
With those that can afford it , their girlfriends always look like someones daughter.
When vacation is making the rounds to distilleries you just may have a problem !
Their corn whiskey is aged in barrels that are previously used to age maple syrup. That lends a great flavor!

The girlfriend also bought a fifth of "white" Makers Mark for $36. This is available only at the distillery.
Now, we know to make bourbon you have to age the liquor in a charred oak cask for 7 years, obviously a difficult and expensive process.
But grain alcohol? Ferment corn for 5 days, distill it in a few hours, and bottle it! They can't have more than 3 bucks in that bottle and I bet the glass cost more than the booze.
