Stripping Wood Finish

I have a few Uberti made SA revolvers and the polyurethane finish, slightly red stained wood neither looks nor feels right. I've done paint thinner but it doesn't work all that well. What should I use to strip off whatever that clear poly coat is and leave bare wood? The wood will be stained and refinished so raising grain or stripping existing stain isn't an issue.

That's exactly the endorsement I was looking for -
Light wet or dry sandpaper going with the grain works. Go easy around the edges to not change dimensions where wood will meet metal when reassembling.
Have fun.
