Can anyone tell me if the holes for the receiver sight are factory or added later? There is evidence that it had a receiver sight mounted at 1 time. The gun also has a Lyman front sight installed.

Burt could likely help you, but he hasn't been here much due to health issues. The factory letter $$ would tell you for sure, likely done later.

    Hope Burt is doing better.

added Do you see the bright rings around the screws. Those are high spots from pulled metal by the act of tapping (by Bubba IMHO). Do you see a ring around the other screw(s)? No that because it wasn't Bubba and likely done while the metal was in the white and then polished before bluing.

Winchester standardized the drilled and tapped sight holes on the left side of the receiver at around serial number 1,750,000. But they were added only intermittently until about serial 2,000,000 when they became standard. The holes were intended to fit the Lyman number 56 receiver sight.
Winchester was very often slow to make consistent changes, and very often guns from early in a changeover period do not have the change recorded anywhere. If you get a "factory" letter it may not list the sight holes even if the factory made them on an early serial number.

Nice info. Will keep that in mind. On the subject they look installed later but I know nothing.

Winchester did not standardize drilling & tapping the Model 94 receiver "at around serial number 1,750,000" for a receiver mounted sight. That event took place in the year 1953, in the 1916400 - 1926850 serial number range. Any Model 94 Carbine found with drilled & tapped receiver holes prior to serial number 1916400 should be carefully examined for signs of aftermarket work. While there was a small number of legitimate special order drilled & tapped Model 94s manufactured in the years preceding 1953, they are relatively rare (< 1%). The vast majority of them were drilled & tapped outside of the factory.
