One of the darkest days in South Dakota history and for the 7th US Cavalry, on the morning of December 29th, the 7th US Cavalry of almost 500 soldiers arrived at the camp of Spotted Elk?s (Big Foot) band of Miniconjou Lakota and more than two dozen Hunkpapa Lakota near the Wounded Knee creek where they had been escorted to the day before.
The US troops were attempting to disarm the Native Americans and a deaf tribe member was refusing to give up his weapon when it went off.
The Calvary then opened fire on the tribe. The Native Americans did their best to fight back unarmed. In the end between 150 and 300 Native Americans were killed. 90 men and 200 women and children, along with 51 wounded, including Spotted Elk.
Today the site is a historic landmark.
