Single shot Shotguns, Anyone else,

Keep multiples out of the safe scattered around, behind doors, etc. Loaded ready to go? Ammo bands on each. 6/7 reloads.

My go to Idiot proof wake up in the night gun.

Inexpensive guns with lethal capabilities kept out of the safe, due to space restrictions.

Sorry Ricci, my Tablet (4G Verizon dedicated Internet,) has major issues on posting new threads. Have to post a few words and then come back in (edit) and add the rest.

I have a few and when you could pick them up for reasonable prices I have given several away  to young shooters.

Not a fan of single shots for self defense.  Reloading after each shot is not an idiot proof operation, IMO.

Have my nightstand piece which is an idiot proof SA/DA autoloader, a pump action shotgun (because everyone knows that cycling a pump action scares the bejesus out of an intruder) and a AR Carbine ready to go.
All are well hidden but easily accessible and are always in the same place and readiness conditions to avoid any surprises.

Not saying I do not have more capable firearms on hand. (I do.)

Simply saying I have a few single shots stashed around. If you have handled them enough growing up, re-loading one is second nature.

My single shot is for trap. For self defence it is either the wheel gun in at 6, the autoloader in at 7 or 14.

I keep a S&W 642 Airweight in .38 spcl. on a leg holster attached to the upright of my bed, by my head. I also keep a 20ga. Mossberg 500 bedside.

    Single shots scattered around.

Just saying. No kids or wife, to worry about. Plenty of on hand firearms. Just throwing out my single shot 12ga. Proclivity.

Not saying/implying that is all I have at hand.

So you are like climbing over single shot shotguns on you way to the bathroom five or six times per night?? Are they loaded?!?!?!?! Is Buddy safe with all those loaded weapons laying about???? Are you Paranoid??? Why do you need so many guns?? What is wrong with you????? Belay that last question, probably use too much bandwidth.

Agreed, as are break action side by sides and over/unders.
I reload these from the pocket of a shooting vest and it is very quick.  Have not tried from a bandoleer, but can't see myself being comfortable doing so if there are a couple of people in my house up to no good.

I do.  I've used single shots all my life and have a few stashed around.  When I lived on the farm I kept a single shot 12ga and single shot .223 in the barn along with ammo for each.   On a farm you could need a gun for a lot of reason and then I figured if I was caught away from the house "I am not going to be killed for lack of firing back."  ;)

I have 18 single shot break open shotguns...

Both makaila and Mackenzie each have a .410 and a 28 and a 20 in their gun lockers / wall safes...

While of course their are better more capable and advanced platforms for self defense out there they are cheap and monks export level of operation and readily available - certainly for most more accurate than a pistol - they are a valid home defense gun even more so when used in concert with a house pistol.

Years ago, a large friend known as Tiny was night clerk at the local stop and rob.  Gremlin showed up with a single shot 20, announced a robbery.  Tiny says that's cool- but the boss is going to fire me if your gun is not loaded.  So gremlin aimed straight up, fired his SINGLE SHOT SHOTGUN.
Tiny pulled a 3 iron out from under the counter and beat him black and blue.

I have a old ithica 410 my dad bought for 8 bucks  and I claimed when I was about 8 or 9 yrs old
dad told me when he was younger some of his buddies had pump guns but  a pump or auto were way out of his price range he had a old single shot but taught himself to hold shells between his fingers and do fast reloads  using that method and got decent at it .

The Iver Johnson Hercules is a perfect live outside the safe gun. Local gun show, Bud's and I were wandering around. This one caught my eye. First because the barrel looked so short, second because it has a solid rib on top. It looked like a 10ga.

It had been professionally shortened and a brass bead mounted on top. Black Cerakoted. $100 bill and it was all mine. I measured the barrel before completing the sale. Later, in the same show wandering around, I was standing next to a State Trooper at a table, both of us looking at firearms. I noticed he kept looking at the shotgun broke open and carried in the crook of my arm. I told him "I know it looks short. I measured it before buying to be sure it was legal, would you like to check it?"

He said, "No, that's good enough for me."

Wears a butt stock ammo band with 6 more shells in it. At the very least, it is an awesome club with good balance. 😉

I have one in the barn but that is it.  I am looking for a 410 SS.  I have a bunch of 410 ammo but no gun to shoot it.

Single shot shotguns, may be a more regional thing. Here in the sticks growing up, that was what was around. Big in NC, TN, VA, W VA etc. Other areas of the Country probably not so much.

1st gun I probably ever shot was my Pap Paws single shot 12ga. (I took my hat off before shooting it, he turned around and started laughing, thinking the recoil took it off.)

In addition to the normal nominal standard single shot break open shotgun I also have...

    *single shot semiautomatic

    *toggle lock action

*bolt action (may and tube fed)

    * rolling block action

    *Straight pull action

    *Murata action

    *9mm rimfire garden gun

    * .22 targo smooth bore bolt action with miniature disk thrower

    * a webley .455 converted to shoot .410 gauge shells with extended bbl and an adjustable choke (to kill messenger pigeons)

    *.410 tranq revolver

    Etc...

I've got some of them #8 tracer shot shells.
Bet that tracer would burn more than rock salt burns. (if they did not go down on the first shot you could see the tracer burning in the dark for the second shot if they were running or flopping around)
Might reload them tracers to 00 buck shot.

While some think I don't actually own any guns and only "steal" pics from the internet...

It's fun to take two dozen snapshots with my phone over the course of an hour that will blow people's shift back...

Just casual pics of stuff laying around the house or pulled out of deep dark storage that does not even represent the prime of my collection but are interesting secondary blowby pieces acquired by chance at random...

How odd that the objects of my primary concern sometimes garner no interest but the crap I have laying around excites folk...

How many pics of unobtanium unicorn white whale guns must I post being held in my own hand...

Still nice that some appreciate it.

Mike, I appreciate your many exhibits. You said to remind you a few months back to dig out what you thought was a 37 Win. Receiver (paper weight) Here is a small sample of my Single Shot Thirty Seven Heaven and assembly line. -------------------Ray

    Very nice collection 4205Raymond.

Why (if I may ask, are you drawn to the 37?) What makes them unique?

I don't own one nor do I have any desire to have one.

Ken, It is complicated, I will try not to be too long.
When I was a youngster Dad always made me use his 37 Win 12Ga when we were rabbit hunting with the beagles down in Virginia. Dad borrowed Grandpa's beautiful 20Ga sxs Stevens because he was afraid I would damage it. With the factory butt plate on, the 12ga will tear a youngster's shoulder off. I hated the damn thing and don't know how I killed as many bunnies as I did with all the flinching going on. When I was in AIT Platoon SGT. broke me of flinching habit and I was 2nd highest Expert in Co. with Garand.

A little later in life they would only let me shoot once at the NG Armory because they were afraid I would win all the Turkeys with the 37. God only knows how many whitetails went down from the 12ga and double "O,s" In the right gauge, right choke, right barrel length, right ammo you are ready for anything in the forest or field and competition, Google Arnold Reigger and the letter Winchester wrote to him on his 37.

In my 1940 Stogers Shooters Bible 28ga list for $8.45. A really nice one now with the 30" barrel will push $6,000.

The 37 points and balances beautiful, I think. Two weaknesses: It is hell on extractors if you don't take care of the gun and the 12ga kicks like a Army mule. Never drop one of the older ones with curved buttstock on floor hard. Will shear right thru plate and butt stock at toe. They will crack behind upper tang and next to receiver for a variety of reasons but I never considered this a problem. I call the receiver on the 37 the badge of honor. Bluing on the older ones long gone from heavy use and some of the older barrels still look like new. I have one that I case hardened and put gold lettering in it where the red use to be. I think Turnbull would be proud of it.

It was a cheap, built like a tank production gun that got the job done. The 37 more than any other I believe was the gun that the Farmer used to put meat on the table, keep the fox and hawk away and protect his property and family. It was Rural America!

When I look at these '37 Winchesters I see Dad and my roots in Rural America. Take a kid hunting or fishing and you will never have to visit him in prison.----------------Ray

Learned to shoot bunnies with a Stevens 94b 12 gauge. The black and blue shoulder was a badge of honor among my buddies. Now a days I still have 3 single shots. A BT99 that had the choke reworked by a gentleman by the name of Herb Orr. A BT100 with the factory thumbhole stock and a Remington 870 competition. So I guess I've had a single shot in one form or another my whole life. Bob

I grew up (SW Virginia) hunting everything with the cheap single-shot shotguns.
Ken, you are correct about this area.  Everyone had at least one SS.
My dad used to take me to shooting matches.  He had an Ivor Johnson that apparently had the perfect choke (checked by dropping a dime down the barrel).  Guys would grab their guns off the rack and leave when they saw us come in with that old IJ.

Some years ago I put together a small collection of SS shotguns and purchased a 44 caliber Ivor Johnson.  The seller thought it was a 410.  It is my understanding that back in the early (?) days there was a 44-40 shot shell.  It was meant to be a small game getter for "cowboys" who carried a 44-40 revolver.  However, as we know, those short barreled, rifled revolvers do not produce an effective shot pattern...so Ivor Johnson (and possibly other companies) produced cheap SS guns for the 44-40 pistol shot shell..  I have fired mine using 44 Special shot shells.

I can't believe they misspelled "Pork and Beans!"

How about a 2 shot Semi-Automatic? (Could be 3 if you keep one in the tube.) The Remington Automaster 878.

20ga. Mossberg 500 (Okay a Western Plainfield) Pump. (Adj. Choke)

    Iver Johnson Champion. (Full Choke)

The aforementioned cut down barrel Iver Johnson Hercules.

    Crescent Red Chieftain. (Full Choke)

Savage Stevens 311A 20ga. SXS. (Full/Improved Choke) [in the safe]

Wish I could post some photo's. (My Tablet does not want to cooperate after the most recent Chrome update.) Apparently lots of people complaining about the same/similar thing.

A wide variety of 12ga. Pumps in the safe. From Win.1897 to Bennelli Super Nova, and a bunch in between. Fair collection of Riot Pumps. (High Standard so smooth, if you stand it upright it will cock.)

I like Shotguns. A lot of times when I go to collect a firearm from an FFL, I am looking for and usually leave with an obscure low $$ Shotgun I see in the rack.

Thanks for the comments and photo's guys.
