There have been a few moms and puffballs around the area the last week or so...there was a dead racoon on the road a few days ago and the last couple of nights two puffballs have been wondering around the yard alone. Little buggars that seem to know how to forage around.

Last night there was only one little guy....so I crept out and got a couple pics of him and left a hand full of kitten chow for him near the tree it has been hanging around.. He munched on it for awhile before moving on....we will see if he is back there tonight...

He has a mask like a bandit.

I know the Racoons around here think they own the place. If you interrupt them while they are helping themselves to the cat food they will hiss.

The little ones are sooooo cute. We had pets off and on throughout the years. One never washed his food or climbed a tree. Was rescued before his eyes were open.

I counted four a few nights ago helping them self to cat food

And I see the water pans for the cats each morning have been used to wash paws in

I will haveto set some live traps and move them along

We had one 40 years ago that was mote of a pet funny little fellow

Also at night his relatives would rattle the back door my wife had started passing out marshmellows and if she was late they would remind her

This morning I saw 3 of the little boogers running across the backyard towards the creek. I guess they had to wash their paws before breakfast.

They are cute as a june bug, but you really don't want to get a herd of them started around the place.

I think I'll find the GREATEST John Candy movie " The Great Outdoors" and watch it this weekend. I think this movie started the competitive eating contests. Long live the Old 96er.

The German word for raccoon is "Waschbaer" or "The little bear that washes."

    ********************

KASSEL, Germany – The story goes that Nazi henchman Hermann Goering imported a pair of raccoons from America in 1934 and ordered them set free in the woods of central Germany to “enrich the Reich’s fauna”, as he put it at the time.

In the 70 years since then, these “Nazi raccoons” have multiplied in such prodigious numbers that there may be upwards of a million of the rascally American mammals in Germany alone – and they are spreading rapidly to neighbouring countries at an alarming rate.

So alarming is the spread of these nocturnal creatures, who have no natural enemies in Europe, that officials are considering drastic measures to cull them.

A stroll through Kassel, in the wooded hill country north of Frankfurt, reveals a city under siege. It was near here that that first * couple was released, and it is here that they are most populous.

Experts say there are 100 racoons per square kilometre in the Kassel area – the same density reported in the racoon’s natural habitat in North America.

Residential homes in Kassel resemble fortresses, with mesh wire covering all openings, spiked defences on downspouts and gutters. Even attic windows are barred.

Rubbish bins are secured with bungee cords or padlocks in some cases.

Tales abound of how pies vanish from window sills where they are left to cool – or even food from the stove top. Nearly every family has seen glowing eyes staring in through a window at night.

One couple recently told how a raccoon slipped through the cat-flap in the kitchen door and ate the pet cat’s food before retiring to a cozy cushion for a nap.

Folks in Kassel have even learned to put netting over fruit trees to prevent rapacious raccoons from stealing fruit.

Kassel is possibly the only city in the world to have hired an animal control officer whose sole duty is to patrol the streets in search of raccoons and answer residents’ appeals for help in ridding their attics and back yard tool sheds of unwanted furry lodgers. He drives a special vehicle marked “Der Waschbaermann” (Raccoon Man).

The city has even paid zoologists from a nearby university to tag and study raccoons in a bid to determine the scope of the problem. The radio-beacon tags permit researchers to follow the animals and learn about their habits and population densities.

My dad talked about eating baked racoon and groundhogs and opossums when he was growing up at that time and there cirstances any thing was fair game for the dinner table of course the normal rabbit and squirrel on rare ocassion a hog or dear not much choice and eat what you grew or could hunt or go hungry

He did tell me the young ground hogs were better tasting than old ones and racoons if I rember correctly he said were a bit greasy

I think a lot about him and many more like them struggling thru life

Now uncle Sam provides so much to somany all they have to do is just vote for them to stay in charge
