303/30-06 wildcat ?

338magnut338magnut Member Posts: 761 ✭✭✭

I recently bought an odd lot of ammo and there was some 30-06 cases shortened to 308 length and necked up to 303 and was wondering if anyone has heard of these or just someone experimenting. Any info is always appreciated. Terrill

That's one I never heard of. Maybe someone needed to clean up a 303 chamber and used that reamer to do it. Then used the .311 303 bullets so they would fit the bore. Kind of a backwards way to do things because .308 bullets are a lot more available in various forms and weights than .311 bullets. To each his own I guess. Bob

In the "old" days it was common to reform 30-06 cases to 7.7 Jap when the Jap ammo was not available or hard to get. A knowledgable home gunsmith could remove and shorten the 7.7 barrel chamber, rechamber to .308 or .300 Savage and then reload the .311 bullets. A lot of trouble but it gave you a shootable rifle.

I once loaded some 150 grain 30-30 bullets in my 7.7 Jap Sporter and it shot very well at 100 yards. Groove diameter was .312.

I agree with Mobuck, The most logical answer - 7.65 Argentine.

Another reason why I never bought guns that shot "exotic" rounds.

    Someone 're-purposed' 30/06 cases into 7,65 x53.
