A real gun thread...any info on this T/C would be appreciated

This one has me stumped. I have tried to research this one and keep hitting a dead end… I was told it was made in 1996. It is in .22LR , the hammer has a switch to go between rimfire and centerfire. Any info would be appreciated….

Looks like an Encore, can barrels and stocks be changed?

  • William81William81 Member Posts: 25,332 ✭✭✭✭

Yes they can. No other markings on the barrel or frame…

I think encore is correct, I may have a manual downloaded. I have a couple.

T.C. Contender with a carbine barrel which is interchangeable for another carbine barrel or a pistol barrel with appropriate handgun stock. These are neat, I have one, but in order to install a pistol barrel the action has to be registered as a handgun. Don't put a short barrel on it without removing the rifle stock, very illegal as a short barrel rifle. Look up Contender rifle or carbine and you will see others like yours.

I don't get that, no <18" barrel on a rifle stock, yes, but I bought both of mine as actions, and have pistol and rifle stocks to mix and match. Regestering as a handgun must be a state thing. Mine went through an FFL, but ain't registered.

With a pistol barrel installed you have an unregistered handgun, if you leave the rifle stock on, you have an illegal short (less than 16 inch) barrelled rifle. I bought my first one as a handgun and it is legal as such with any length barrel. Remember years ago T.C. stopped production of the .45/410 barrel as ATF classed it as a 10" shotgun. But, Hotshot .357's and .44 were O.K. go figure.

Pistol barrel on hand guns stocks should be legal. I also have rifle stocks for longer barrels and "rifle" calibers. I do have the .45 Colt/.410 barrel. Legal on a handgun? Or not legal assembled at all? If I only have .45 Colt ammo?

Back in 2003 when I had my FFL, the TC Encore was one of the hottest selling guns on the market.

The ATF made it known specifically, that each Encore frame had to be registered as a pistol. They were very clear about that during my "training" with Moulder and Scully.

I can't validate the Contender version of the TC product line, but I believe they are grandfathered as far as the interchangeable barrels.

I do know for sure that the Contender frame didn't have to be registered at the time of my indoctrination.

The Contender frame should also have a conversion from rim-fire to center-fire. Encore and Pro-Hunter do not.

The Encore was introduced in 1998.

Thank you, this verified 1996 on this model and it is not an Encore but simply a Contender ?

Thank you for all the information….. I am still trying to figure out if this was a limited edition. As I understand this model, it was offered in 1996. It was sold as a .22LR carbine but other barrels are available but it will not accept any TC barrel, only specific ones.

Thank you elubsme and all that have offered information… I am now trying to find a 1996 TC catalog to try and figure this out..
