blood worms, where do they live?

i remember fishing for flounder and mackeral as a kid in the LI sound and we used blood worms. we bought them.
but where do they come from? i hate those nasty critters.

    They live in subtidal and intertidal waters. Yes in the mud they burrow and yes they will bite if you are slow putting them on the hook...
