There is NO WAY you were in the 4th grade...I'm not that old Patt! Please tell me that was a typo! After I came back, I went to my little brother's classes, 3-4th grade to talk to the kids... You are making me feel very old right now.[;)][^]

    Oh yeah...

I found a 1935 Dodge Power Wagon up on blocks without any bullet holes in it. It was at some chicken farm that had the heck blown out if it. It looked like it had been an old fire truck converted to some sort of farm water truck. Still had a bell on the cowling.

I was working at a local dive bar at night in Portsmouth,Va, and they made the annoucemnet on TV that the war was starting. An older lady sitting at the bar began to cry. She said it brought back memories of Vietnam and all the friends she lost over there.
The next day I volunteered for Minesweeper duty.

I remember my enlistment time being up. I remember being at LeJeune at Christmas time and canceling my Dec wedding because my bride was afraid of what would happen to me over there. I remember lying in my rack, staring at the ceiling, days before Christmas and days before leaving for Saudi and Bing Crosby coming on the radio singing"I'll be home for Christmas". I remember being in a class at LeJeune and being told there would be a 90% casualties of Engineers(glad he were wrong)I remember the umpteen innoculation shots, and the hemoglobin. I remember going to mine sweeper coarse's and practicing with Vietnam era equipment. I remember my flight into Saudi Arabia, I was sitting near two Vietnam vets telling war stories, I remember looking out the plane window for hours seeing nothing but sand. I remember the bromide pills. Once the bombing started going on all night, I wondered how any foe could survive that. Really dampened their spirits, Iraqi's were walking south in the daytime, just giving up. Many did not want to be even fighting.

I remember an explosion then seconds later the M8 alarm went sounding off. I never moved so fast, lol. There are several other memories, but not wanting to take up space.

    Concrete, concrete and more concrete!

Emergency Helo Landing Strip in the middle of nowhere.

Seeing a M1A2 tank at the firing range with 12 miles on it, and it smelled like a new car inside. Then pealing the sticker off the front and trying to order one! (That went over like a lead brick!)

    2/41 FA 3ID (attached to 1AD)

I remember arriveing at 3AM and the heat was still rising off the tarmac. I remember being fed by some Saudi catering compant (pigeons, I swear) and getting sick.

I remember that a guy from my patoon shot himself in the foot to avoid combat and being the first American soldier detained and held for court-martial during the Gulf War. We were so proud of him. LOL!

My dad who flew C-5's on reserve told my mom he might be deployed in a way that clipped his income or hurt the flow of civil service versus active duty. He asked her to pull the wage garnishment she had to pay an attorney $4500 to get because he wouldn't do it voluntarily, which she did against everyone in the family's advice. The POS stopped paying her even though he had no disruption to his pay.

I tried to get her to get a half million dollar life insurance policy on him with double indemnity and gave her a 100% assurance she wouldn't have to wait long to get it. She's a more forgiving soul than I am I'm afraid. Actually she was pretty sure I'd do it.

Hooking walkmans up to the intercom systems in m1's for a case of water apiece. Listening to the bbc on our hf radio from 6am to about 10 am when the signal would fail. Raiding broke down trucks for ammo for our unit. We were issued 15 rds apiece. Brought back a 5 ton load of belted saw ammo. Turning 21 the night the air war started. sitting in my hole drinking near beer watching the fire works.

I am torn between knocking out our V-packs and the smell of burning poop and diesel in the morning being stirred by yours truly most of the time. The homemade davey slings were fun I could throw a rock 100 yards and the fact that from december to june i never had one solid stool. For those of you camped out on tanks and in tents for months on end as we did remember how much the simple things like walking on solid ground gave us so much pleasure D co 1/2nd ACR

I was in the 10th grade and was about to turn 16, getting a drivers license, skipping school with friends, playing football and baseball, and trying to get into one of the cheerleaders' pants was my world. We watched stuff getting blown up everyday on TV in JROTC, but other than that I didn't pay too much attention to it.
