    For Longhunter:
Yep. I believe if people have a core set of beliefs, and neither party represents those beliefs, then they might form a new party. Both our current parties were formed something along those lines.

I am for the Constitution which means I am neither Democrat or Republican. I have yet to find a viable party that supports the Constitution even though both major parties pay lip service to it.

Where has a third party worked yet? I wish a third party would work because neither the Democrat or Republican party are not doing what the country needs right now. If the republicans were to get a little tougher and stick to republican beliefs I think things would be better.

Curly, glad to see your post in here you r welcome and don't be a stranger please. As for The republicans...it was a lot of their beliefs that got us here in the first place..see the thread on the civil war over in general disc. for more on that....#rd parties DO WORK.You do not necessarily need to elect someone to effect the way congress votes...they need the votes to maintain their jobs. They want outside votes, they are like the undecided ones, they can make or break a polotician and they know it.We need to send them a message.....

besides you can have voted against a canadidite who won but if you contact him/her in office and complain and act as if you did vote for him/her and may not in the future how will they know any different?

When guns were invented everything changed. For the first time in the history of the world a frail woman had a chance to sucessfully defend herself and home. My dream is that one of the anti-gun nuts will need a gun for defense and be unable to have one because of their own actions.

Third parties generally only do well in a proportional representation system (see UK). We have a winner-take-all system. Third parties rarely do well in a winner-take-all system short of some kind of earth shattering revolution.

I respectfully disagree....Go back in history and look closer, there USED to be more than 2 parties.Although the third was not a real viable party they did do a lot when it came to lawmaking and such. They controlled enough of thevote to have an impact.Polaticians NEED votes, isn't that why they go after woman, the minorities etc.? Of course it is,we r not talking about changing EVERTHING here, just their line of thinking on certain issues.....Get enough votes and they will HAVE to take note.....Look at the BIG picture, L.H.

We can live in the ancient past all we want, but ther really hasn't been a viable third party in quite some time, and even those times were often marked by sort of paradigm shift in thought. The closest we came was perhaps arguably Perot in '92, and even then, it wasn't so much the Reform Party that was a force, but rather the popularity of one man (Perot), who just happened to be a member of a third party.
Regarding the courting of women, minorities, etc., not everybody does. A lot of it depends on where you are, what issues are hot, and how do they affect people differently. That said, the general rule of thumb is, for a Democrat, you have to get 40% of the white vote and 95% of the minority vote to win. For a Republican, just reverse the figures.

Whos living in the past? The voted control what politicians do and say period.Take how many people of age to vote that do not.If a bunch of stepped up and voted they could defeat ANY of the political favorites just by sheer Numbers...Numbers are the one thing Politicians understand.Use it to advantage. It is all about Education, that we all need to vote, and that it is NOT necessary to vote strictlty within one of the 2 parties to have an impact. The only thing you tend to prove if you believe that only the 2 parties can help you is that They have done an assume job of brainwashing as they have with most of mainstream America. It was INDEPENDANT thinking that got our forfathers to revolt and form this grand republic wasn't it?And now that entire thinking process is outdated?I do not think so.Ross Perot could have been elected and again he was charasmatic but people were READY for a change. They are ready now....Have an open mind about this two party thing please.Take a minute and think just WHO benifets the most by you believing that only the 2 parties are viable.....

Thank you, just wish others would at least listen.....the vote belongs to us,the people. It is the ONLY power that we have. When we restrict ourselves to the 2 parties, both a bunch of crooks,we submit ourselves in bondage to these parties? Why can no one seem to see this?

Seeing it isn't the hard part; doing something about it is. I, for one, don't have any idea where one could find a group represented by individuals with both the appropriate views and financial backing. And of course, there is the whole "voter trust" issue; difficult to back an untried party, based on word alone. Never know when that addage about their lips moving is going to hold true....

I posted the following on another thread, but it kind of fits here also.

If you notice, over the last number of elections, there are more and more people voting for a third party. If more people would get out of the "mind-set" that ONLY a democrat or a republican will be elected, we could have a chance to vote for someone, that we feel GOOD about voting for. Not the same old "lesser of two evils" Granted the two major parties are the only ones to get elected "now" but in the future (hopefully) more people will come to their senses and realize that neither one of these parties are "for the people" and turn to someone that actually believes in the principals that this great country was founded on. (Not just gun laws.)

There have been a few people elected in recent years that were not one of the two major powers. (not that it always worked out that well) but they WERE elected. We can do the same thing on a larger scale, if (big IF) people would (pull their head out of their neither region) and put some thought into who (and how) they want someone to run this country, and quit voting strictly along the two party line.

I have heard the old argument that you are throwing your vote away. But if no one is willing to START the change, there can be no change. It has started, and I hope it gains momentum like a snowball rolling down hill. It will happen someday, the question is, will it be too late? I will continue to throw my vote away (if that is what you want to call it) I go to bed at night with a clear conscience. I did not vote that (whoever, local, state, or federal) into office.

P.S. The last few elections, some of the people and/or issues I voted for/against, actually went my way. Maybe the times are changing.

For Longhunter: The problem is when people say they are a Republican and sticking to Republican principles, they can't always identify what they mean. For example, Republicans (I was one most of my life) say they are for smaller government, lower taxes, and less regulation. Less compared to what? And, if the bar keeps moving to the left, which it has, after a while we have moved so far to the left that less now would be very much 20 years ago. I am a true conservative. I have found many Republicans are like a ship with no rudder. They have no way to orient their direction other than different from the Democrats. If they would hold up the Constitution as their standard, now we would be talking. For example, California, my Republican friends are saying Arnold is good because he is not as left as Davis...and Mussolini wasn't as fascist as Hitler??? Six of one, half a dozen of another.

    For Longhunter Part 2:

Every so often I write my elected officials, two Republican Senators, a Republican Congressman, a Democrat Congresswoman, and so forth and ask that they show me in the Constitution where they are authorized to do most of what they do (national parks, socialist security to medicaid) and they won't answer!!! Yep, they answer my letter but won't answer that.

pickenup: there might be a easier way to support a third or fourth party (that's just me, I always looking for an easier way). Instead of one man, one vote, change it to you can vote for as many canadidtes as you want. (but only once per canadiadte). In that way you could show your support for the third party and even hope they win, but in the meantime use your vote to put the major party canadidate into office. I like this radical idea what about all of you?
