Sometimes we melted Potassium nitrate (two parts of the three) with one part sugar.

(slightly risky process if you want it done correctly.)

    But MAN, we got smoke.
Do it in a barn or outside or whereever you see fit, if this sets off - the whole house can be Zero-visibility in no time.

Instead of melting it, you can grind it in like a salt-cruncher or coffee-mill and add the fine powdered sugar too. Mix it real good.

Make a contaier of alu-foil (preferebly 2-3-4 layers) and close it with a rubberband.
But where you close it with the rubber band, put in one of those stormproof matches - those with the really big amount of "matchhead-material.

Light it - throw it - and you got cover.

(this gets hot, so don't pick it up or throw it in dry grass - you can get a fire of this - I have another way of making instant thick smoke, but with a slightly more complicated chemical background. The smoke is not dangerous, but the residue should be handled carefully.)

Yeah, experimented with Thermite-compound once, it melted right through a ?" stainless steel plate.

Have done wonders on cast iron too. =o)
