Powder for 40sw

skyfishskyfish Member Posts: 1,068 ✭✭✭✭
Getting ready to start loading for 40 S&W, what would you advise on. Looking for good metering, economical and may work in 9mm as well. All will be going through a progressive press. I picked out a powder but since this is my 1st pistol reloading I thought I may see what people that actually load it use before I go buy a keg of it.

Get a couple of good reloading manuals and see what they say to use with the bullet weight you plan to use. Most powders for pistol loads meter very good.

Agree w/DCS Shooters. I use WSF and it works fine for the 180 loads I prefer, but most listed loads for the 40 S&W are ball powders and they will all meter very well.

I use 231 for lead loads and AA5 for jacketed loads.

Well, my 1st choice was Power Pistol, I'll stick with that. I thought of N340, but to pricey. Still may switch to TiteGroup at some point. Try to shoot several hundred a month.

I use Ramshot True Blue. The Ramshot powders are so fine that they meter exceptionally well. The standard deviation on my load is very low. When I run out of True Blue I may switch to Hodgdon Titegroup for my target loads as I load it for several calibers and it will save my shelf space.

I've never had that problem, but I live in a warm climate and if using a handgun in cold weather it's usually a big bore hunting revolver, so I guess I couldn't say for sure [:(]

I use Titegroup and lead 180 gr truncated cone's. The old lady loves it and has shot about 2000 or so of them.

If you are going to use the same powder for both handguns, you should consider the weapons, high performance handguns such as SIG and Glock and others have been known to have trouble functioning with "fast powders". When you look at the AA#5--AA#7 range you should be in good shape.

I loaded my 1st batch off my new Hornady LNL progressive. 180 gr rainer bullet, 6gr Power pistol. Will see how they function before I load a lot, only loaded 12. Have a FNP-40 and a P2000 in 40sw.

I do like the Clays....a lot cleaner than powders I've used in the past. Gets all the velocity I need. And accuracy isn't hurt at all.

I really like Clays for just about ANY Auto Handgun.... Great in a 45 Auto as well.

No apologies; I just thought another "speed" in the Accurate line needed to be tried.
