Savage model 10 223 twist rate

Does anybody know what the the twist rate on the barrel is ?

It is a heavy barrel rifle I don't know if that makes any difference or not

Any help is apprieciated

    Savage uses a 1 in 9" twist rate for all of their .223s.

    All of the Savage .223's that I've seen have had a 1:9" twist. But to be sure, you should put a tight patch on a cleaning rod and measure the twist in your specific barrel.

    Most likely 9, although they will now sell you a 7 twist on request. I think their older guns were 12s.
    Run a tight patch on a swivel handled rod with a mark on it and measure how far it goes to make one revolution.

    What bullets will 1:9 stabilize? In particular will 50gr. shoot well through it?

    From Shilen's website:

    .224 CF
    - 7" for bullets heavier than 80gr.
    - 8" for bullets up to 80gr.
    - 8"* Ratchet rifled 4 groove
    - 9" for bullets up to 70gr.
    - 12: for bullets up to 63gr.
    - 14" for bullets up to 55gr.
    - 14"* Ratchet rifled 4 groove
    - 15"* for bullets up to 55gr. driven 4,100 pfs or more
    - 16:* for bullets up to 55gr. driven 4,300 fps or more

    These weights can be a little misleading since it is the length of a bullet that determines the twist rate, especially when you consider that this can't include the longer VLD bullets and monometallics like Barnes.

    9 twist will stabilize 69 gr boattail match. Might handle a 75 gr bullet; some will, some won't. A substantially shorter/lighter bullet will be stable but the only way to know if it is accurate is to shoot the gun. My last 9 twist barrel shot 52 gr SMK very well.
