.40/65 loading data?

MIKE WISKEYMIKE WISKEY Member, Moderator Posts: 9,972 ******
(new rifle to play with, looking for suggestions)I've got some basic data for this using xmp5744, trail boss, and xmr-2495. Rifle is a 1888 martini conv. in 1899 to .303 (smaller firing pin tip). barrel is a 34" douglas 1/2 rd, 1/2 oct. .410" grove dia., bullet I want to use is the Lyman 360 gn. pointed bullet. I'll probably shorten the barrel to 26"/28" after I shoot it a bit (so I don't need wheels to move it far).

A friend of mine that died a few years ago had a M1885 40-65 for which I had loading data. some was with blackpowder, but shooting it caused a major mess and significant clean-up. Loading with smokeless powder wasn't "original", but it did work out a lot better. The loads were with SR4759, and 4198. If interested in those, I can check my records.

thanks ray, if it isn't too much trouble. I'd like to shoot mostly smokeless, but I'm also going to try 777.

Finally found the data. After my friend died, his widow was going to sell his 1886 40-65 to me, but a son-in-law convinced her otherwise, so the data that we had developed went into a corner- but alas here it is: We used Lyman moulds, #2 metal, WW cases that were a bazillion years old, mould #403169, weight about 260 gr, 24 gr of Hercules 2400;. Mould #403149 bullets weighted bout 330 gr, 33 gr IMR 3031.

I didn't have a chrongraph available for the shooting, but based on the trajectories velocities were sufficient for hits on deer out to about 150 yards.
