.401 Winchester load data

Any suggestions for a source of reload data for the .401 Winchester for the Model 1910? What is the actual bullet size--same as 40 S&W, or .41 Mag?

My 1947 reprint of the 1941 Second edition of "Complete Guide to Handloading" by Philip B. Sharpe has some data for the .401 Winchester for SP bullets in 200 and 250 grain weights as well as for 250 grain lead.

Many of the powders listed are no longer available but there are loads using 2400, Unique and 4227.

I could post some of this data if it would be of any help.

I also have an old Lyman manual that may have some data but I don't have it handy right now.

Cartridges of the World has some load data. They also mention that the bullet diameter should be .406".

You can make cases out of 35 Remington. Here are the 401 demensions.
Edit: Apparently I can't cut & paste the demension drawing.
I load 14.6 grains of Unique behind a 200 grain jacketed bullet, using a Win WLR primer.
    Hope this helps.
    W.D.

Warning! Notes: General Comments - The 401 is the most powerful of the Winchester Autoloading line, and the only one suitable for deer. The 401 found favor with many hunters as a quick, short-range number for hunting deer and black bear. Velocity is too low and the trajectory too high for this to be a useful cartridge beyond about 150 yards. It can be reloaded, but like all cartridges used in semi-auto guns, it is necessary to stick to the factory ballistics or the rifle action may not function properly. Proper bullet diameter is 0.406 inch, but 0.410-inch revolver bullets can sometimes be used safely - verify chamber clearance. With a bit of lathe work, 35 Remington cases can be converted to work perfectly in 401 WSL chambered rifles. (Cartridges of the World 10th Edition)

If you need cases or bullets you could try Buffalo Arms Co. (www.buffaloarms.com).

They list .401 Winchester cases "formed from existing more readily available brass".

Also .406 jacketed and cast bullets as well as .406 bullet molds.

    Good luck !
