Lyman Deerstalker Stainless.UPDATE(towards bottom)

steeltoe1978steeltoe1978 Member Posts: 3,248
Anyone own this rifle? What do you think of it. All info is appreciated. Also, is there a .45 cal stainless percussion cap rifle on the market that looks "old style" (not like the newer inlines today). I could have sworn that I saw one somewhere on here at one point, and it had a black synthetic stock, but it was styled after an older rifle. I really like .45 cal, as I have other BP guns in that cal, and it would be less money going out when I buy ammo. If no such thing exists, I might just have to go with the Lyman Deerslayer in .50 cal in stainless. Thanks.

I think most say that the .50 calibre is the way to go for deer. It puts 'em down for keeps! A .45 might mean more tracking or closer shots. I'm sticking with the .50 ... in-line or cap & ball.

    Is this the bad boy?

I didn't know that Lyman made such a "modern" looking gun, they are known for their historically accurate plains rifles {Hawkens}.
Lyman has a very good reputation so I bet this would be a top notch gun. Lymans are accurate!
I would stick with the .50, as I have killed 7 deer and 6 wild hogs with the .50 round ball and it really knocks 'em flat.
I never had a game animal go over 50 yards with a lung shot with the .50 patched round ball.

Don't get me wrong the .45 will kill deer, no doubt, but knowing what I know now I would stick with the .50
Cost of ammo ? Not much more for the .50

I see you like the stainless. Why?
I would sure wrap that shiny barrel with camo tape before I took it deer hunting, no doubt it would cost you a deer sooner or later to be moving that shiny barrel around.

THAT'S IT! [:)] I've been calling it a "Deerslayer" when the correct name is the Deerstalker. The reason that I would like a stainless is because I intend on using it mostly for target/recreational shooting, and it's less time to clean. The only reason I would like a .45 cal is because of the other BP guns that my brother and I have in that cal, but I'm open to a .50. The Traditions gun that was posted by 220combat is interesting as well. The only thing is that the Lyman one is ALL stainless, while the Traditions one still hase case hardened steel parts. The difference in cost is pretty significant. How does the Traditions Deerhunter 50cal Percussion Rifle Stainless, stack up to the Lyman one in your opinions?

I'm quite familiar with Lyman products for reloading. Once again, here in Ct I buy direct from them, about 15 minutes away from me. But, I have never used their rifles. I have continue to use Traditions because I started with them because I found them first, about 45 minutes from me. Lyman has top quality products, and I have never heard anything bad about them. Many popele I know use them for target and hunting. I buy the Traditions because they have a "seconds" shop and they are quite cheap there.

Did anyone see on Traditions website the new flintlock rifles that can use pellets instead of loose powder?

I really can't compare the Lyman to the Traditions rifle. I have a Traditions cap and ball pistol made by Pietta and I like it.

Both Lyman and Traditions are made over in Europe, unlike TC "made in America."

Hell if you aren't worried about deer hunting get the .45

And, to be fair, I know a guy who is a real "old time" hunter type.
He built his own flintlock 30 years ago and has killed over 100 deer with it, longest shot 120 yards.
This rifle is a .45 and he shoots 'em in the lungs and he knocks 'em about as flat as I do with my .50
For hunting, though, anything a .45 will do, a .50 round ball will do better.
    And a .54 will do better than a .50

Thanks for the reply... I'm very jealous right now. Good thing I don't live where you live, or the "seconds" shop would always be out of stock. There's a scratch and dent appliance shop near where I live (friend recently bought a stainless steel fridge with a 3 inch scratch on one side of it for $400 less than a non scratched one, and the side the scratch is on faces his wall and can't be seen)... but a seconds gun store would be WAY cool.

I shouldn't have to mention this, but I'm sure one of you is thinking it. Seconds gun cannot have any firing mechanism defect, barrel interrior defect, or anything that would affect accuracy or sefety. Seconds only relates to finish issues. I have purchased 8 guns from traditions "seconds" store and every one functions perfectly. MOST were under $100. The only one that wasn't was a Lightning Bolt gun in 50 cal with a camo synthetic stock, and nickel barrel and action. It was purchased new from cabelas for $279, then returned because it had a broken ramrod. Cabelas sent it back to trad. and they wouldn't sell it as new because it had already been sold once beofore. I paid $109 and they already put a new ramrod in it. If any one is interrested, the store is in Old Saybrook, CT, on RT 1. I haven't been there in a year or so, but maybe there is a market for these discounted guns on GB.

Wow, this does sound like an interesting store - especially if you live nearby! Old Saybrook, you say ... I live SW of Boston and I do have relatives in Brookfield, CT ... hummmmmm ... do I feel a trip coming on!

SW of Boston is not far. If you went south on 395 through eastern CT, past the casinos, then south on 95 a few miles, you're there. About 2 hours from the Framingham, Wellesley area. Not near Brookfield, but hey, we all get LOST sometimes.
