I have my dads 50 cva but it's never been fired, can I shoot it using the powder pellets?
I would like to shoot it, but never fired a black powder rifle

    it depends on which cva you have, inline and 209 primers sure, cap lock not so much

    Pellets are made for the modern style inline muzzleloaders and need a good strong flash from the primer for good ignition. Loose powder is for the traditional style muzzleloaders and is easier to ignite.

    This thread is little bit old but:

    Try to find a owners manual for your BP gun and read the manual couple times.
    You can go online or contact the gun manufacturer and normally get users manuals for free. It's their safety policy to assist their end users.

    Like the guys say pellets are normally for in-line guns and loose powder for flint locks and sidelocks.

    We have used pellets on TC Hawkens, changing to a Musket nipple and caps for more fire.
