S&W Pistol SW40 Good or Bad??

Another question for you experienced fellows out there. I came across and opportunity to get a SW40 at a seemingly reasonable price and was wondering if any of you had good or bad things to say about it. Your opinions are appreciated! Thanks

I guess I should clarify. I agree with you that like the cartridge as I have a Glock 22 now. My question was if the Smith & Wesson SW40 pistol was a good or bad one based on your experiences with it. Thanks again!

If it's a GUN you're referring to, I can't say anything; but as far as the CARTRIDGE goes---it's not very good for target-shooting. I bought a .40 S&W Beretta---shot like crap. Bought a .40 S&W Ruger---shot like crap too. I had a 9mm Beretta and a 9mm Ruger, and both shot well, especially the Ruger---amazing out-of-the-box accuracy. And I've read in one of the gun magazines---it might have been Gun Digest, can't remember specifically---that the .40 S&W is an "inherently inaccurate cartridge".

Me, personally, I wouldn't own a .40 S&W handgun of ANY sort after having two guns shoot so poorly that I could THROW the bullet more accurately....

I guess tr stoned has got a couple lemons when it comes to 40's. The two I have will keep them all in a 12" group at 100 yards. I don't own one personally, but The SW40's seem to be a decent gun for the money. Not a CZ, beretta or sig, but certainly along ways from being a POS highpoint or jennings.

I've got a Kahr covert 40 and its darn accurate, dependable, and a great shooting gun. When I have shot from rest and making sure of an ideal shot, they all go right where they are supposed to. Maybe it would not please a real expert, but its a lot more accurate than I am. I can do about 3 inches at 15 yds on a good day from standing, and not giving myself much aim time. I've never done much better than that with a 9 mm, and I have owned a bunch of those.

I reload my own and shoot lead, basic reloads. There was one problem. The pistol needed the cartridges to have a factory crimp to cycle right. It means an additional step, but is not a big deal. I am going to get an MK 40 for the smaller carry size soon.

40 s&w is a fairly powerful bullet. It is designed to bridge the gap between 9mm and 45. Based on the numbers, I'd say I would be happier to trust a 40 against an attacker than a 9.

I guess everybody has their own experiences.

I have a Smith Sigma in 40 cal. I have had it for several years and have had not a single problem with it. I carry it for personal protection, and in that role I do not need accuracy out to 100 yards. I can hit what I need to at personal defense ranges. So it depends on what role you want the pistol to fill. An accurate target shooter it is not. A reliable self defense (and with the 15 round mags) pistol with firepower and ( Hydro-shock rounds) stopping power,it is.

Check out a Glock 35 in 40 SW. Great shooting gun! By far the most accurate 40 I have ever shot.
