This topic comes up so very frequently, that I thought it might be a good idea to post the information here and to make it a permanent Sticky. I can not verify the accuracy for most of the sites listed below, but they are the best information that I have at this time.

    If your Winchester serial number list was published by George Madis (or any other author for that matter), it is not accurate. The primary reason I posted this topic was to provide people with the only known accurate source of information for Winchester firearms. The Cody Firearms Museum (CFM) is currently in the process of correcting and rewriting the serial number tables for several different models. If you would like a copy of the initial article published by the CFM curator (David Kennedy) concerning this topic, please contact me via PM.

    Hi All, I called Essex Arms to find out how to get the mfg. date on one of there frames, The guy (Luke) said I can help you I gave him the SN He had me wait a couple of minutes and he came back with the year of mfg. for what it's worth my SN is 48946 and it was mfg. in 1983. sure is nice to call someone and not get the run around. Just thought I would share this info with everyone.

    I posted this as a new topic,but I'll say it here since this where it belongs. I went to the Browning website using the link in a earlier post. It gave a range of serial #'s and years but nothing all that specific before WW2. If the serial # is under xxxxx it is pre WW2. The 2 serial #'s on mine are pre-WW2 but a member answered saying 1938 and 1938 for the 2 serial #'s. Maybe I just missed a page on the website.

    I was the person who gave you the 1937 and 1938 dates repectively.

    Yes, the information on the Browning website is lacking for the early years. That said, there is a really superb reference book titled "Browning Auto-5 Shotguns, The Belgian FN Production" that does list the serial numbers by years.

    i bought 2 colts and a browning off a friend a few years back. he got them from various gun and outdoor shows and i may want to sell off 1 of the colts. is there a site to find out if its been stolen or if its good to register? my friend has since passed and i cant find the reciept we made up. just want to cover my * just in case!

    No, there is not a website. Contact your local P.D. and ask them to run the serial numbers.

    No, there is not a website. Contact your local P.D. and ask them to run the serial numbers.

    Well for starters, it is not a "WINCHESTER"... instead, it is a U.S. Repeating Arms Co.     Here's a serial number/DOM listing for Ithaca shotguns from 1880-1986. It also contains listings for Baker, Crass, Lewis, Manier, Flues, NID, Knick, LeFever and Western types.
