    impossible. first m50 was #1000.

odds are it might be a replacement receiver?

can you show us a pic of the serial number so we can determine the font used in the hallmark? we can tell you if its a winchester hallmark that way.

Winchester had two different skeet choke restrictions; WS-1 & WS-2. The skeet 1 is a standard .005 constriction where the skeet 2 is .012, a little tighter than an improved.

basically you have a 20ga skeet gun.
there is no proofmark on the receiver under the number, thus im lead to believe the receiver may have been replaced on the gun. or, when engravers engrave, sometimes they polish the receivers down to get a perfect finish. i'll bet he did so and buffed off the numbers and proofmark and forgot what the numbers were and just re-registered it as 0001. the bbl is an original winchester round post vent rib skeet bbl. the engraving is not winchester. it has a skeet stock but has a pigeon grade forearm. dollar to donut, this gun is a parts gun slapped together to resemble a high grade skeet gun. 50/50 it is a simmons or pachmayer upgrade.
but all in all, its an interesting gun.[^]

Hello Wyoming: Interesting gun. First a clarification is needed. The FIRST PRODUCTION Md 50 had a S/N of 1000 and it was presented to John Olin.

Since Carbine Wiliams started the R&D of the Md 50, in July of 1947, there is no telling how many receivers were machined, from then until production started. However there were many problems with the 20ga. version and it wasn't availble until 1956.

While Proof stamps are "hand struck" and generally run about .010-.012 in depth, the serial number is much deeper, Around .020-.025.
that's a lot of metal to "polish off". The edge radius doesn't show evidence of that kind of polishing.

The barrel is "double proofed" with a WP and a P so it obviously was bought from a authorized dealer. As opposed to directly from Winchester. Also it has the "CyLinder" post but not the donut post rib supports, this came out in 1957. The rib top has the machine matted finish like it's suppose to. So this is a "factory VR barrel".

The engraving looks to "blocky" simalar to the roll engraving on a Md 59. but the receiver looks to be steel as opposed to aluminum. Wyoming have you tried a "magnet" on the receiver to verify it's steel?

As to the wood, well it could have been mated up to the gun at anytime.

Generally R&D guns carry the "EXP" after the S/N. However with Carbine you never know what he did.

After looking at the pictures, at best this is a "parts" gun. The problem lies with, who got the parts, when did they get the parts, and where did they get the parts.

Definately a conversation piece wyoming. Have you pulled the barrel off and looked at the chamber? Is it the first or second style? Is there a Proof Stamp on it?

    Regards Dave
