I have inherited a mystery

My Grandfather was a WWl Veteran who was also active in the Spanish Civil War. A cousin recently gave me a small automatic pistol that my Grandfather had left to me. We are not certain where my Grandfather obtained the weapon, but he carried it in his boot while on duty as a County Sheriff for 20 years - from 1936 to 1956.

The weapon is engraved along the barrel: pistola automatica cal 6.35
the second line reads --d- Modesto Santos Eibar Espana. From tip of the barrel to end of the slide it is 4 1/4 inches - bottom of the grip to top of the barrel is 3 inches.

Can anyone help me identify this weapon? I wish to restore it and pass it on to my grandchild with all the family history it represents. Thank you for your time.
