An elderly aquantience has a Luger. Hopefully I can tell him something about his pea-shooter. I am doing this from memory but can post photos if it turns out to be necessary.

The gun is chromed, barrel about 6"
The serial number is 6160, all numbers matching including the holster, the Nazi stamp is clear on the holster.
A "42" is stamped on the top of the receiver, I think there was BYN stamped on the gun too.

I would rate the gun at 97% because I saw no flaws or marks that would stand out.

Is this gun worth more effort to identify better and what is an approx value?

I recently bought a P08 Luger - Serial Number 62XX (trigger guard & frame) - made by DWG. It is marked 41 on the rear of the frame, all other numbers match except for the rear sight piece and the magazine.

The interesting marks are on the frame next to the Nazi marks. It has the Eagle over the Swastika, but it is also marked SS655. The SS is regular script, not the Runes or lightning bolts.

Does anyone know anything about these markings?

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    DCP.

A local pawnshop has a Luger that may be coming out of pawn soon. It's a standard 9mm, 4 inch barrel. All numbers match, including the clip. What I was wondering about was, there are no markings on top. NO date, no makers mark. It doesn't look like it's been polished. Is this normal? Also, it does have a stamp on the grip, in front. If I remember right, it's L.Sch.#---. There is a three digit number that I can't remember. What does that indicate? It seems like a good gun, about 50-60% bluing, good bore. I don't know what the guy will ask for it yet though. What's it worth?

Pass on the tradition, teach a kid to shoot.

Sounds like a Frankenstein. Parabellums weren't chromed. The byf is for Mauserwerk and the 42 is the year. Someone has added a six inch barrel to a WWII weapon and chromed it. I understand some of the rod and gun clubs on military bases in Germany made those up and sold them in the fifties, but who knows who did it?

Hello I hope things are going well in West Va. This old guy has a Chromed "war trophy" . Will be of little interest or value to LUGER collectors but MAY be EYE CANDY to those that don't Know or Care.

To p3skyking: It is true that Lugars and 1911 autos were sold in Germany in the 50's. I was stationed there at that time. I know Lugars and army issue 1911s were sold from the PX in Stuttgart, Germany. I bought a Remington-Rand 1911 brand new, in greasy slick paper in box for $25. The Lugars were the same price. I choose the Remington-Rand over the Luger because I feared the Lugars might be mis-matched parts put together from captured parts. In my time there I never heard of any type of shooting club or anything like that. Gus.

    Gus,
My source is a retired Air Force guy that is a regular in my shop. He told me that GI's could buy them on base and gunsmiths in town would do whatever you wanted. He also told me the rod and gun clubs on base were very active. Perhaps it was only his base.

    Interesting.
What kind of holster did it come in?
Does it have an adjustable rear sight and is it on the toggle or on the barrel?
If it has a 6" barrel and a holster to fit it, it is either a Nevy or Artillery model. Location of the rear sight would define it.
