since i dont own a 42 with a simmons rib, are all simmons ribs wider than the receiver grooves like this?
is this known as the infamous 3/8" rib?
did they make a rib as narrow as the grooves on the 42 for other 42's?

Hello Bob: Simmons "standard rib ramp is 5/16 in." which is wider than the groove on the receiver. There "wide" rib is 3/8in. Now Simmons builds "special ribs" to the customers request. So it's entirely possible to see even a 1/2in. rib on a 42.

Winchester factory vent ribs, were all 5/16 with a 5/16 wide rib ramp.

Could there be a "1/4in." aftermarket vent rib on a 42, possible but unlikely. It would be to narrow to cut the "dove tail" to hold it onto the top of the rib post, and would be easier to dent. The "pachmyer rib" which the square rib post and rib where all machined out of one piece of metal may be the only one that would be 1/4in.

    Regards Dave

ok, so then this rib is correct and the most common youd see on a simmons 42?
you know where im going with this, im looking for all 5 guns to look the same down the top. i just need to know which way to go for my 42 to match the 20/28ga. looks like 5/16 is the way and looks like the 42 receiver grooves are smaller than the 20/28. right?

The gun pictured has the most common Simmons rib. 5/8? not on a 42.
