45 for a former medic

Before the Army issued 9mm's, I qualified with a Colt 45 in the mid 1980's. I'm trying to find the same type of Colt. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Most of the ones I see were manufacured during WW1 or WWII. Pretty sure mine was a later model. Specifically, I want to purchace the same type with the same U.S. Army markings.

Thanks in advance.

What you want is a Colt 1911A1, which was the Colt issued to the United States Military from the 1920's until it was replaced by the Beretta 92F in the 1980's.

Most of these guns are beat to oblivion, the last ones manufactured at least 50 years ago. However, you can buy a brand new in box replica of that from Springfield Armory. Their GI 45 line allows you to get that pisol, with those features you had on yours. However, they make it in stainless as well if that appeals to you.

Colt does not make the 1911A1 spec anymore, but does make a 1911 WW1 reproduction which is the same gun with different features.

Hello The last GI contract 1911A1 made by colt and others was built in 1945 Many of these pistols were rebuilt a number of times and The Military thought they were getting LONG IN THE TOOTH[?][?] that is why we had test trials in the 1980's and came up with the BERETTA 92 TYPE in 9MM[V] If you want a military contract pistol there are many of them on the used market. Or you can but a reissue Colt 1911 that was put out a few years ago . IMHO a colt series 70 has all the good points of a GI with better sights and better fit. YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY. I have the Colt 1991A1 which is a Series 80, its just a plain jane Colt just like the one you shot with the addition of the firing pin blocker and you can still find them new in gun shops.

You might be happy with something like this:

    Remington_2.jpg?t=1220185401

It is a 1911A1 that has mixed parts & has been refinished. It will take some searching, but you should be able to find one either locally, or on the Gunbroker site. Expect to spend around $1,000.

If you find a gun & are not sure what you are looking at, take some photos & post it for these guys, who will be glad to help you out:

Or, if you don't care about the colt name - and quite a few from war years weren't colt made - you could get a Springfield Armory, Rock Island, or some other maker's version. All the same design from JM Browning...

WWII GI M1911A1s were made by Colt, Ithaca, Remington Rand, Union Switch & Signal, and Singer (but you probably won't find a Singer....they're very rare).

Try looking at the Gunbroker auctions.....sooner or later you ought to find what you're looking for.

Are the pistols listed in those auctions REALLY worth anything like what they apparently want??? 5 grand for the last one? Navy? wow!

You want a pistol that looks and works about like your issue 45? Check out Auto Ordnance 1911A1. The Colt purists are gonna scream, but it's a lot less than several grand. Your 1980 carry weapon was made LOOOONG before 1980!

All the Auto Ord guns are now series 80 guns. The best shot is the Springfield for reproducing a GI colt. Also, at around 500-600 it is a lot cheaper as well and not worn like a GI surplus unit. It will be new and work well.

Dunno if it makes a difference to you or not but the Springfield GI style 1911's are made in Brazil. A friend of mine just bought a Auto Ordnance GI 1911 which is owned by Kahr now and made in the US out the door w/tax for $470. It's a really nice shooting .45 although with those old style sights you have to focus pretty good lol.
