Is there a difference between the standard rifle receiver and the "target rifle" receiver?

Not from any source I've found... If you're wanting to build a custom get a Volquartsen receiver. They're expensive but second to none. Also, I personally wouldn't want to modify a classic, but AMT makes their Lightning using a steel receiver instead of Ruger's aluminium receiver.

i have the ruger 10/22 target/laminated stock. according to the ruger manual, the reciever is made to closer tolerances than the standard 10/22 models. nothing is visable.
