S & W 29- what model ?

I looked at a S&W model 29, 44mag. It had a 6" underlug barrel, the cylinder was smooth on the outside, a real funky adjustable front sight, rubber grips. The guy claimed it was a factory gun made in the mid 80's. He had a "combat-shooting holster" with it.
