COLT letter or the original box. [;)]. I know in later years Colt Sub-contracted people for their Grips . On the checkered Ivory one Littleberry Hicks in Lynchburg Va. did many pair of grips.

Wilson, in his "The Book of Colt Firearms", states that pearl and ivory grips were available at extra cost for both the Colt Models 1903 and 1908 pistols. However, the pearl grips on the pictured Model 1903 pistol have the Colt medallions.

we are talking about the 1903/1908 .380 pistol?
    or the 1908 vest pocket?
both were available with multiple grips and finishes.
the vest pocket had no medallion pearl and ivory grips as an option. checked walnut were the same extra cost: 12 bucks!
the 1908 .380 also was available with pearl but usually had a medallion. BUT some didn't.
back then, colt would make you whatever you wanted for minimal premium.
unfortunately, many colt letters on these don't specify optional factory grips. there are some telltale signs of "period" ie old grips and that might be the best classification. there weren't a lot of after market grips back then, so likely factory.
    post some pics.
