wood stock colors variation colors

I am looking at a rifle and there is quite a bit of variation in the color of the stock on either side. It is quite a bit darker on one side compares to the other which is lighter. I don't think that it has been refinished. I have seen other rifles like this in the past but not many. Could this be just an odd stock variation or something else?

Stock was cut out of a log where the wood had transition from sap wood to heart wood . Not the best quality wood.[V][:(] You want the stock to be quarter sawed if possible to prevent warping during use and changes in temp. and moisture really only 4 Stocks per log meet this desire.
