Regarding fairly well known firearms, in this case a Colt AR-15 from the 1980's, are there any resources somewhat like book values, or is walking the shows about the only way to get the feel of it?

Original box, accessories and documentation. Is a plus, for maxim value on older out of print firearms. Some folks buy these things off of fleabay, to increase the value of their guns to a collector.
You can search completed auctions for actual selling prices.

Prices on these can vary based on location.
A 1980s Colt AR-15 could actually have a pretty nice price tag on it, if its grandfathered as a "pre-ban" configuration rifle in a "ban" state.
You can trying checking auctions selecting by your state. You can also ask around knowledgeable gun enthusiasts in your area.
