Regarding fairly well known firearms, in this case a Colt AR-15 from the 1980's, are there any resources somewhat like book values, or is walking the shows about the only way to get the feel of it?

The market is flooded with AR's nowadays. Only way it would have any substantial value. If it is totally factory original, in excellent condition. If so, check the actual selling prices on our auction. To get a ballpark value.

Original box, accessories and documentation. Is a plus, for maxim value on older out of print firearms. Some folks buy these things off of fleabay, to increase the value of their guns to a collector.

Shows work for local values. Asking prices are usually higher than selling prices, sometimes not by much.

You can search completed auctions for actual selling prices.

    http://www.GunBroker.com/Firearms/Completed/BCI.aspx?Keywords=colt+ar-15&Timeframe=1

more search terms would limit the results.

Prices on these can vary based on location.

A 1980s Colt AR-15 could actually have a pretty nice price tag on it, if its grandfathered as a "pre-ban" configuration rifle in a "ban" state.

You can trying checking auctions selecting by your state. You can also ask around knowledgeable gun enthusiasts in your area.
