I got a model 42 win ser #1597xx. This is several hundred higher than the blue book says the serial # go. Any thoughts or comments?

    Yes... the Blue Book of Gun Values is notoriously inaccurate in regards to all Winchester manufacture information. The DOM tables in the back of the book were derived from the poorly researched information published by George Madis back in the early 1960s. Winchester actually manufactured/serialized a total of 164,801 Model 42 shotguns.

    The receiver was manufactured between 01/24/61 and 03/06/61 according to Ned Schwing's book The Winchester Model 42
