Nikon prostaff binoculars or ???

One of my sons is living in Utah and I'm wanting to get him a decent set of binoculars for Christmas. Budget $200-300. I know you get what you pay for but that's my budget for this.
Was looking at the Nikon Prostaff 10x40 as an option.
Anyone used these and what is your opinion? Anyone have other recommendations in this price range? Not looking for over 8x-10x, prefer to stay about the 40mm lens range. No compacts as field of view matters.

What is the use? Scouting game? Boating? Birding? Neighbor's hot tub?
I did not check out the specs or reviews on those, but based on brand thought I'd point them out for your consideration.

You can go with lower power and larger objective and get more light to your eye.
