I believe it is still in use in their Trap gun, and the Wingmaster's.

I have often wondered that, based on the 870 guns I own, and my family's 870's, I'd say about 1977-78.

Just an educated guess. I hope we get a definite answer.

I have never seen a Wingmaster that did not have a silver lifter.

are you thinking when the EXpress came to be? i too never saw a Wingmaster without it, and never saw an Express with it.

I think that was one of the cost saving measures when they made the express guns.

They also made some Special Purpose Wingmasters, with a matte finish, that were all black...bolt and all.

those were the POLICE model for the Wingmaster:
    The 870 Police has:
An aluminum trigger group. (Possibly changed to Polymer in 2008).
The old style magazine retention system.
A much smoother finish inside and out, no machine marks or burrs.
The Police gun receives a higher level of inspection and finishing and is built in a special area of the plant from 100% inspected parts.
    A military-grade parkerized finish.
    A polished bore.
    A one piece barrel.
Walnut or synthetic stock, with a short police-length fore end.
The Remington "R3" super recoil pad that reduces felt recoil by 30%.
Choices in different stocks, including Speed-feed, and others.
18" to 20" improved cylinder barrel, with a wide choice in sights, including rifle, ghost ring, and luminous.
Police options like magazine extenders, forearms with built-in lights, and sling swivels.
    Heavy-duty magazine spring.
    Heavy-duty trigger-sear spring.
    Heavy-duty shell lifter spring.
    Sling swivel mounts.
No use of MIM parts, the extractor is milled.

Don't let yourself be fooled. I sold a lot of 870's, 1100's, and 11-87 SPECIAL PURPOSE guns during that timeframe. Look it up in the Blue Book...all dull matte finished, some had wood, and some were synthetic. Yes I do agree there was also a police version, as I sold some later POLICE trade in's, too.
