Can you identify it.

    The notch on the side of the butt plate is very distinctive. It's for a U.S. Army rifle dating to the 1840's. Known to collectors, as the "Mississippi Rifle. The notch is cut out for the patchbox cover, on the side of the stock. It held spare caps, and cleaning equipment.

    Most of the early Mississippi Rifles had all brass furniture. Including butt plates. Contract made Mississippi's, were made by various manufacturers as late as the 1860's though. They might have used iron or steel furniture?

    It is a steel butt plate for a Model 1855 rifle or musket
