    My WAG, is that it's either for a French Lebel or Berthier rifle. More than the markings seem to be French, than any other reason.

    Without the markings, it would be very difficult to call. Most 19th and 20th Century BA rifles. Had very similar butt plates.

    It appears to be from a Model 1777 French musket also called a "Charleville".
