Nice little rifle. Reportedly made by a one-armed gunsmith named Morton, in or around Wichita Falls, Texas, in the 1950s or 1960s.

Anyone familiar with Morton's work?

Anyone seen such a rifle before?

Half octagon, half round barrel, marked "MADE IN AUSTRIA," and "BOHLER SPEZIAL STAHL." (Bohler Special Steel.)

Built on G.33/40 Mauser action. Stock is nicely and extensively checkered.

Thanks in advance!

In the 1960 Gun Digest there is a listing under custom gunsmiths for a Morton Gunworks, 2115 Santa Fe St., Wichita Falls, TX. In the same gun digest there is a photo, on page 198, of a full stock Sako .222. The caption with the photo reads in part ...stocked in the distinctive Payl Morton manner, with his graceful carving and checkering...

Obviously he was well known enough to have his rifle pictured among products of the well known custom gunsmiths of the era.

    Wow! Thanks!

My Gun Digest collection jumps from 1956 to 1972.

Would you like to photocopy the article and send it to me?
